Kin Support

Kin is made by a small team, and support email reaches a person who works on the app itself — not a ticket queue.

To help us help you faster, include your iOS version, iPhone model, and what you were doing when the problem happened. Please do not paste private journal content into an email — we never need it to diagnose anything.

Common questions

How do I get my data out of Kin?

Settings → Export. Kin writes an open archive containing a JSON file for every entry, note, plan, and person, plus your photos as ordinary image files. Nothing is locked in a proprietary format. We recommend exporting regularly and keeping the archive somewhere you control.

Can you recover my journal if I lose my phone?

No — and this is by design rather than an oversight. Kin has no servers, so we never hold a copy of anything you write. Your content lives on your device and in your own iCloud. If iCloud is enabled, signing in on a new device restores it. If it is not, the only copy was on the lost device. Please keep your own exports.

Does Kin sync between my devices?

Yes, through your own iCloud account, using Apple’s private CloudKit database. Sign in to the same Apple Account on both devices and make sure iCloud Drive is on. Sync is between your devices only — it never passes through us.

Do you read my entries?

No. We cannot. The app has no accounts and no backend of ours, sends us nothing, and contains no analytics or tracking. Your entries never leave your device except to your own iCloud, which we have no access to.

A reminder did not arrive.

Check iOS Settings → Notifications → Kin and confirm alerts are allowed. Focus modes, Low Power Mode, and Scheduled Summary can all delay or suppress delivery. Kin keeps a rolling window of upcoming alarms, so reminders far in the future are scheduled as nearer ones fire. Please do not rely on any app as your only alert for something time-critical or safety-related.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are managed by Apple, not inside Kin. Open iOS Settings, tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions, and select Kin. Cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.

How do I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple Account, and select the purchase. We have no ability to issue refunds directly, but tell us what went wrong and we will try to fix it.

How do I lock Kin behind Face ID?

Settings → App Lock. You can require Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode on open, and set a grace period. Kin also covers its contents in the app switcher while locked.

How do I add people without giving access to all my contacts?

Kin never requests full Contacts access. Tapping import opens Apple’s own contact picker, and Kin receives only the specific people you select — their name, photo, and birthday. You can also add people by hand and skip Contacts entirely.

Can I change how Kin looks?

Settings → Theme. There are six themes, each with a matching home-screen icon, and each with light and dark variants. The app follows your system appearance by default.

What do I need to run Kin?

An iPhone running iOS 26 or later. Kin is built for iPhone; iPad and Mac are not supported in this version.

Something else is wrong.

Email us. Include your iOS version, your iPhone model, and what you were doing when it happened — that is usually enough to identify the problem quickly.
